Gird your loins! THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA is a new musical based on the blockbuster film and bestselling novel, strutting into London’s Dominion Theatre in October 2024. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA features an original score by music legend Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, a book by Kate Wetherhead and direction & choreography by 3-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, Hairspray).

Fresh out of college, aspiring journalist Andy scores a job at the prestigious Runway magazine working for fashion's most powerful and terrifying icon — editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. Sacrificing her personal life to meet Miranda's impossible demands, Andy finds herself seduced by the glamorous world she once despised. How far will she go to succeed... and will it be worth selling her soul to get what she’s always wanted? Hilariously fun and fabulously stylish, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA tells an inspiring story about discovering what kind of person you truly want to be.

Devil Wears Prada review from the Devil herself

You may be reading this with the misguided assumption that, because I am the star of the show, I would somehow be an ‘unreliable critic.’ Just like the rise of cowboy boots and cropped waistcoats, you are wrong. For who is more qualified to give an accurate assessment of the production, than someone who is an expert on the regurgitated material?

The 2024 musical, based on the 2006 film, based on the 2003 book, is based on my life! My word has far more authority than the theatre luvvies I found myself surrounded by. Who I would just like to take a minute to address -  just like your self-satisfied musings, the black sequin jackets you wear will never feature in Runway, or even Vogue. Please stop trying to ‘make it happen’, the plastic shining discs are quite distracting and offensive on the eye. Mercifully, I had Emily as a human shield. Her hideous bulky cardigan and heavy skirt blocked out the glare from the gaudy outerwear, and my sight was saved.

I used my unencumbered vision to cast an exacting eye on the offering presented to me. Housed in the Dominion Theatre, a quaint two thousand seat auditorium in the heart of the West End (which is to say the fringes of, as the heart is located on the left of the chest, not the dead centre) the originally titled The Devil Wears Prada the Musical officially had its grand opening. I was prepared to be wowed…

The musical opens with ‘Emily’ wading through the crowd to address the M&S-clad theatregoers. She sarcastically asks them if they have taken enough photos of the set, and berates those who are even thinking about opening sweets during the performance, however slowly. I couldn’t be more proud. I only wish the real Emily was as commanding as Miss Di Bartolomeo

Once my fellow audience members were rightly put in their place, and the smuggled snacks were coyly returned to their (one can only hope ‘free’) tote bags, the lights were dimmed and the musical began. What followed was a spectacle so thrilling, so engaging, so fabulous, that it rather reminded me of someone… me. And what could be higher praise than that?

The Devil Wears Prada Musical review: a model example of reinvention done right

The Devil Wears Prada Musical review: a model example of reinvention done right

The little black dress, created by CoCo Channel in 1926, has been a wardrobe must-have for almost 100 years. The simple staple has undergone countless transformations, alterations and adaptations to fit in with the modern woman’s wants and needs. An ever evolving art form, fashion takes inspiration from the past to propel itself forward, enthralling and exciting its audience in the process. The Devil Wears Prada Musical is a model example of reinvention done right.

Since its announcement in A/W 2023, The Devil Wears Prada Musical has been hotly tipped to be this season's must-see show, with tickets to the production flying off the (virtual shelves) faster than 2010’s Mulberry Alexa. And, much like the leather satchel, we can’t see this expertly crafted musical going out of fashion any time soon. It has the makings of a classic.

Starring Grammy nominee Vanessa Williams, alongside Olivier winner Matt Henry and Six royalty’s, Amy Di Bartolomeo. The fashion-forward musical has more stars than London Fashion Weeks FROW. And they shine more brightly than a Karen Millen Stretch Sequin Maxi Dress.

Vanessa Williams' grand entrance (elegantly rising from the depths of the Dominion Theatre to command centre stage) earned the longest, and loudest, round of applause I have ever experienced at the theatre. And it was well-earned. Since her first highly-anticipated appearance on stage, appearing fully formed and exactly where she needs to be, to her last, she demands attention. She doesn’t need a designer wardrobe and sequined ball gown to achieve this (though of course, she is decked in the most beautifully couture costumes designed by her friend and celebrity stylist, Pamella Roland), but she does so with a quiet authority.

Elton John shamelessly flirts in front of husband of 19-years, David Furnish

Can you feel the lust tonight? 77 year-old singer, songwriter and pianist, Elton John, shamelessly flirts with moderator, Matt Hemley in front of husband David Furnish at The Devil Wears Prada launch.

Elton John has been smashing barriers and taboo subjects with a diamante baseball bat since 1975, so he’s no stranger to shocking audiences. The EGOT winner and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer has been at the forefront of the avant garde, wearing couture dresses long before Harry Styles graced the cover of Vogue in a Gucci floor length number.

Elton John reveals his favourite song, and it’s not Tiny Dancer, Candle in the Wind or Rocket Man

The Oscar winning icon revealed the song he is most proud of. And it wasn’t “Tiny Dancer”, “Candle in the Wind” or even “Rocket Man”.

Dominating the charts since 1968, Elton John’s discography contains eight number one albums and ten UK number one singles, including wedding favourites “Your Song” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. So, when he’s asked which of his songs he’s most proud of, he has a lot to choose from!

Many of the musician's songs from his six-decade long career appeared in the 2019 hit musical biopic ‘Rocketman.’ But it’s a stage musical that contains his favourite.

Best Theatre in 2024 - Must See Shows

We’re only halfway through, but 2024 has already been a fantastic year for theatre! We’ve been treated to incredible Broadway transfers; Mean Girls, Hadestown and Slave Play, 5-star revivals (that both happen to be fans of commas and womens names); Hello, Dolly! and Kiss Me, Kate, and we also welcomed back the multi award-winning medical dramas People, Places and Things and Next To Normal. And that was just in the first seven months!

And it doesn’t end there! We still have plenty of shows to look forward to in the latter half of the year. From a 430 year old play to two brand-new musicals, there’s something for everyone. So settle down, and read up on the best theatre shows to see in 2024.

The 39 Steps

The acclaimed comedic adaptation, transforms Alfred Hitchcock's a classic spy thriller into a fast-paced farce. Unlike the film, the show stars just four actors, who hilariously portray over 130 characters between them.

The story follows the protagonist, Richard Hannay, who becomes embroiled in a spy conspiracy after a mysterious woman is murdered in his apartment. He embarks on a thrilling adventure across Britain to clear his name and uncover the secret of ‘The 39 Steps.’

The classic comedy has received numerous accolades, including an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and two Tony Awards during its Broadway run. So you’re going to want to pick the best seats when you watch it!

Already booked tickets for The 39 Steps, and looking for something else to tickle your funny bones? We’ve handpicked the best comedy shows in the West End.

Why Am I So Single?

Rulers of the West End, Marlow and Moss, have teamed up once more to create a brand new musical! The Six the Musical creators show follows the lonely little lives of two BFFs as they drink/eat/cry/laugh their way through (perpetual) singledom. The BFFs also happen to be creators of musical theatre, but Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss would rather you didn’t read too much into that…

Celebrating love in all its forms, the all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza focuses on mates as well as (lack of) dates. And is perfect for those who are single, looking, or happily partnered.

Marlow and Moss were included in Time magazine's ‘Time 100 Next List’, and share a Tony Award for Best Original Score, so you know you’re going to want to swipe right on their latest project. We’ll even help you pick the best seats!

Waiting for Godot

Starring Emmy winner Ben Whishaw (Paddington) and BAFTA winner Lucian Msamati (Game of Thrones), you know it’s going to be worth the wait!

A landmark of modern theatre, Waiting for Godot is routinely hailed as one of the greatest plays of the 20th century. The play features two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who wait endlessly and in vain for someone named Godot. Throughout their vigil, they engage in a variety of conversations and meet other people, but is the titular character among them?

An existential masterpiece renowned for its exploration of the meaning of life and the passage of time, Waiting for Godot premiered in 1953 and went on to win Best Play at the Tony and Evening Standard Awards.

Waiting for Godot isn’t the only award winning play currently showing in the West End, take a look at our favourite plays currently running in the capital.

The Duchess

Speaking of waiting, Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) finally returns to the West End stage after a decade long absence! Zinnie Harris’ critically acclaimed ‘towering adaptation’ (The Stage) of The Duchess of Malfi, will see Whittaker regenerate from Doctor to Duchess.

A potent blend of horror, beauty, and tragedy, a recently widowed woman defies social expectations, and her family's wishes, when she remarries beneath her. Driven by insurmountable greed and rage, the Duchess’s brothers unleash a series of cruel and devastating punishments against her that repress her power. But will their vicious atrocities come back to haunt them?

The Duchess of Malfi is one of the most frequently performed works of Jacobean drama, and had a huge influence on the  gothic literature created at the time. The latest adaptation is already proving to be just as successful, so don't miss your chance to see it when The Duchess holds court at the Trafalgar Theatre for a strictly limited run. We’ll even help you pick the best seats.

The Devil Wears Prada

Adapting a cult noughties film into a star-studded musical? Groundbreaking.

You probably know the story from the Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt lead movie, or from the Lauren Weisberger novel of which the film was based. If you missed it the first time round - perhaps you were attending an ugly skirt convention - let us get you up to speed.  Aspiring journalist, Andy Sachs, lands a job as an assistant to the demanding Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of the high-fashion magazine ‘Runway.’ As Andy navigates the cutthroat world of fashion, she struggles to maintain her personal relationships and sense of identity.

Former Miss America and current diva, Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) stars as the formidable Miranda Priestly, with music legend, Elton John, providing the original score. We already know you want a ticket, but do you know where to sit? Like a loyal assistant, we’ve picked out the best seats at the Dominion Theatre to help you decide.

Dominion Theatre - Best Seats

The Dominion Theatre originally opened as a cinema in 1929 with the premiere of Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. Since the 1980s, the venue has been home to numerous big West End shows and has hosted the Royal Variety Performance on seven occasions. If you plan to attend a performance, you may want to know how to get a seat fit for royalty. Read on to find out the best seats that offer great views, which will enhance your experience at this incredible venue.

What are the best seats at the Dominion Theatre?

The Dominion Theatre is a renowned theatre located in the West End, offering a wide range of seating options for its audience. The seating is divided into four areas, with the stalls positioned on the floor of the venue. These seats provide an immersive experience and make you feel like you're part of the action. The stalls are divided into four blocks, with seats towards the rear or at the ends of rows being more affordable and still offering great views of the stage.

For a grand and luxurious experience, the royal box provides a royal experience and is situated directly above the stalls. It offers a decent view of the stage and great sound quality. The Nederlander box, located opposite to the royal box, offers similar views and sound quality.

Sitting anywhere in the Circle provides an excellent view of the stage. Due to the modernity of the theatre, sight-lines are clear from most places in the auditorium. Alternatively, sitting at the front of the circle is the most similar to the stalls and makes you feel completely part of the production.
